This mix was originally meant to be an end of term showcase mix for final session at Cre8tiv® DJ Skills course at Midi Music Company in Deptford, London.

I had planned to put together a tight 15 UK Garage set. But, things didn’t quite work out as I expected because of two big issues.

The first was finding out that instead of a 15 minute set, myself and the rest of the cohort are going to be doing the background music for the whole event. So I’d have to rethink the track selection entirely to fit into the vibe of the event a big better.

The second was the words I was worried about hearing: “Family Friendly Event”. Given that the opening track includes the line “is your boss being a prick at work?” and proceeds to get more rude from then on, I felt it was probably best to ditch this mix entirely.

Instead, I performed the mix for practice and have decided to put it out here.

It’s a bit different to my normal style of mixing. I really wanted to push myself in this one and think about getting the transitions a lot tighter. This is really an experiment to move away from the safe “intro/outro” mixing I normally do and instead have tracks transition out a lot earlier. I also spent some time thinking about harmonic mixing in this one and keeping the key transitions in check. I’m still dipping my toes into the world of harmonic mixing, but I can definitely see how it elevates a mix when done well.
